Webinar on Family Acceptance of LGBTQ+youth

Today, children and adolescents learn about sexual orientation, gender identity, and queer culture quite early on, with greater access to information via internet, movies and books. This proliferation of information has helped young people increasingly identify their gender identity and sexual orientation during adolescence. Nevertheless, for fear of stigma, discrimination and rejection, they remain closeted. Often, the fear of coming out to one’s own parents and family creates such deep internal conflict that it adversely affects their sense of identity and mental well-being. Research studies have shown the critical role and profound impact of family on the health of adolescents, especially, the health and well-being of LGBTQ+ youth. Often, parents themselves are quite ignorant about gender identities and sexual orientation due to their upbringing, deeply held beliefs and social conditioning.

This webinar on ‘Family acceptance of LGBTQ+ youth’ is aimed at providing accurate information on sexual orientation and gender identity for parents and family members, and will discuss how they can support early on in their child’s development. Educating, engaging, and sharing appropriate reference for families with LGBTQ+ youth will enable parents and family members to extend their support to children and thus contribute towards a great sense of their overall health and well-being. Through this session, parents and family members will learn about the following:

    • Definitions and meaning of LGBTQ+ related terminology,
    • The challenges experienced by LGBTQ+ youth from family & society,
    • How to support LGBTQ+ children and youth,
    • How family reactions that are experienced as rejection by LGBTQ+ youth contribute to serious health concerns and deter their development and wellbeing

This session will enable parents and family members to come together and learn how to support their LGBTQ+ children to cope with the complex physical and psychological changes in a meaningful, empathetic manner, so that they can thrive in a compassionate world and embrace their true selves.
