Effective (Career) Sponsorship
Sponsorship is a two-way relationship between a senior leader and a protégée based on advocacy and performance. Protégés are high potential women professionals with specified work experience. Sponsorship is a concept where the sponsor advises and counsels their protégés to advance their careers. It is important because it creates measurable differences in the career development of protégés. Sponsors set clear goals and expectations for each protégé as they embark on the sponsorship journey. Well-informed and intentional sponsors can help employees accelerate their learning curves and careers as well. Sponsorships are especially important to underrepresented talent groups like women who are less likely to have an extensive network of relationships and are often overlooked. They tend to have fewer role models and maybe on their own journeys of breaking stereotypes.
