Advance your Journey towards LGBTQ Sensitization and Inclusion

by Amita Kasbekar

In recent years, India has witnessed significant strides towards greater inclusivity and acceptance of the LGBTQ community. The landmark judgment in 2018, which decriminalized Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, marked a pivotal moment in the country’s journey towards equality. However, legal victories alone are insufficient to dismantle deeply entrenched social prejudices.  LGBTQ sensitization is crucial to fostering a truly inclusive culture, where everyone feels valued and respected.

Despite the decriminalization of homosexuality, the LGBTQ community in India continues to face widespread discrimination and social ostracism. Many individuals experience bullying, harassment, ridicule, and even violence.  Students and professionals, who identify with the LGBTQ community, often suffer from a lack of support, leading to mental health issues, and a significant drop in productivity. Discrimination also hinders career advancement and job security. Additionally, access to LGBTQ-friendly healthcare is limited, exacerbating health disparities.

LGBTQ sensitization involves educating people about the orientation, identities, experiences, and rights of the LGBTQ community.  It aims to dispel myths, break stereotypes, and promote empathy and understanding.  Sensitization can transform attitudes and behaviors, fostering a more inclusive culture.  I strongly recommend these in schools, colleges, and workplaces, to create environments where LGBTQ individuals feel safe and accepted.

It’s heartening to see so many organizations that have availed Avtar’s offerings in this space, to create awareness and sensitization among the employees and the leadership team, as they look to embark on or advance their journey of LGBTQ inclusion, within their organizations. As indicated by Avtar & Seramount Most Inclusive Companies Index (MICI – India’s most comprehensive diversity analytics exercise), the number of companies invested in LGTBQ+ focus – from 23% of companies on the index focusing on LGBTQ+ as a strand of diversity in 2019, this rose to 91% in 2023.
