At the Avtar & Seramount Best of the Best Conference themed #PrismofDiversity, Vaishali Phatak, Global Head, Diversity and Inclusion, Tech Mahindra, discussed the need for deliberate action to boost women’s representation in top management.
Vaishali Phatak started her career as a shop-floor manager and has over the years witnessed the evolution of diversity in the workplace. Now as the Global Head of Diversity and Inclusion at Tech Mahindra, she champions the principle of the organization that “Diversity is not just the right thing to do; it is core to our business.”
Recognizing the challenge of a “leaky pipeline” in talent progression, Tech Mahindra introduced the Women Leadership Program to address the glaring gap in top management, where women are often underrepresented. The initiative is built on the principle that equal representation requires deliberate action, including fostering career progression for women. With 40% representation at Tech Mahindra, the company acknowledges that mid-management is the most critical level to nurture as it shapes role models for the future and helps build a defined career path to the top levels.
The program focuses on self-management, business acumen, digital leadership, and women-centric topics. It includes one-on-one coaching, consulting, and high sponsorship, supported by DEI dashboards published quarterly. These dashboards ensure all teams and partners are aligned with the program’s goals, making diversity a shared responsibility.
Launched in 2019 with 28 women participants, the program has since seen global participation, encompassing women across diverse roles. A strong partnership with business units adds context and relevance to the program. Goals are defined from the outset, and the talent management team supports participants through their journey.
Tech Mahindra’s leadership program also emphasizes community support, creating a sense of collective growth. Managers play a pivotal role in the program, ensuring inclusivity and sustainability within their teams. The initiative extends beyond professional development, focusing on holistic people transformation, encompassing both personal and professional growth.
The results have been inspiring, with a growing pool of empowered women leaders ready to take on critical roles. This program is a testament to Tech Mahindra’s commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
