R. Vaishali is India’s 3rd Woman Chess Grandmaster

Chennai-based R Vaishali has become the 3rd woman grandmaster in chess.

She, along with her bother Praggnandha, has become the first brother-sister to become grandmasters.

With two consecutive victories in the Ellobregat Open in Spain with two consecutive victories she went past the 2500-mark Elo rating. She earned the coveted title that was achieved earlier by Koneru Humpy and D Harika.

The 22-year-old has ended India’s 12-year wait to find the next woman GM. Vaishali is India’s 84th GM and is the world No. 11 in women’s ranking.

News reports quoted Vaishali saying that she looked up to the earlier women grandmasters from India as role models.
