LGBTQ+ inclusion is fast becoming a priority for organizations all over the world. Creating such inclusive workplaces is not only the right thing to do but also has a strong business case.
LGBTQ+ is an umbrella term that includes lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transpersons, and queer people. The plus sign indicates that more sexualities can feature under this umbrella (e.g. pansexual, intersexual, asexual, etc.).
Here are 8 ways to include the LGBTQ+ in the workplace:
- Review your policies for LGBTQ+ inclusion: LGBTQ+ inclusion should be the core part of DEI policies. Ensure that all your policies are LGBTQ+ inclusive (paternal leave policy, adoption leave policy, pensions, etc.)
- Provide LGBTQ+ training: The LGBTQ+ community is a minority group and is not openly accepted. Hence providing LGBTQ+ training at the workplace and sensitizing the employees to alter their attitude, behavior, and language are important to make them feel inclusive. Training ensures your policies are heard and understood across the organization and keeps track of progress.
- Set up LGBTQ+ network: Creating an LGBTQ+ network enables the community to connect within the workplace. A network offers a safe space to share their experiences.
- Appoint LGBTQ+ allies: Identify a few non-LGBTQ+ people at the workplace who are passionate about working for and empowering the LGBTQ+ community. They can be LGBTQ+ allies in the workplace, champion LGBTQ+ inclusion, and act as a source of support to the staff.
- List your pronouns: Adding pronouns in one’s social media profiles, and emails, and stating them in the meeting has become prevalent in the business world and the world in general. Clearly stating your pronouns (she/her, he/him, they/them, etc.) will not let anyone assume your gender. When everyone gets into the habit of stating their pronouns, it will become easier for the non-binary and trans people to state theirs.
- Incorporate gender-neutral language: Gender-neutral language in company contracts or documentation illustrates inclusion. Sensitizing staff and team members to adopt the same improves the experience of the queer community at the workplace.
- Gender-neutral toilets: Gender-neutral bathrooms are more inclusive for non-binary people who do not identify with gender binary toilets.
- Celebrate LGBTQ+ events: Celebrating LGBTQ+ history month, pride or tans day, and participating in the pride parades, offers a boost to LGBTQ+ inclusion and awareness throughout the year. Marking the dates and milestones can be a learning opportunity for the staff apart from expressing solidarity with the group. Involve LGBTQ+ and non-LGBTQ+ employees to celebrate important events and milestones to spread awareness about your policies.
LGBTQ+ inclusion is beneficial to the business in terms of productivity. Hence, having robust strategies will make the employees included, accepted, and valued members of a cohesive team.
